Bill Witt, “Crossing Ludlow Street.”

6 7/8 x 9 1/8- inch gelatin silver print on Witt’s original mount. Signed and dated 19478-48 in pencil recto, with title and “Lower East side, N.. City – printed approximately 1950 – 1955” on recto. Signature and same information on verso, with “Photo by Bill Witt” stamp and other notations.

Witt balances the woman crossing the street [thus the title] with the back of the foreground man examining something from the pushcart at left.  The woman is the only figure facing forward. There are many pedestrians and shopers and signes in the background.

This is an excellent print of this rare subject from Witt’s Photo League period. (613bw.4)
