Bill Witt, “Lighting Up, Lower East Side, N.Y. City” 11 x 14 – inch gelatin silver print, signed and dated 1948 in pen recto. Titled, signed , dated in pencil verso, with “printed late 1950’s early 1960’s.” Note that the print does not fluoresce under black light, and so might actually be printed earlier.
In many of the Witt’s street scenes, he is aware of the various gestures, glances and positions of the figures. The central figure is placed in a rich lively context that includes the buildings and signs across the street. This is a very rich print. (613bw.2)
